I have soooo many emotions that are running through me right now!! At one moment I want to cry because I am so overwhelmed with joy, the next moment I am jumping up and down and unable to contain myself in my seat!! Of course you know the McCain supporting coworkers are not trying to see this jubilee and joy that I possess. It was exactly 11:13 PM on November 4, 2008 when I first heard that Obama had been elected. I kinda knew it was in the bag when I saw he had 207 Electoral College votes, but I didn’t want to get too excited. I mean in 2000 I just knew Gore had it and in 2004 I was so sure that Bush would not be reelected!! It was great to see my city come together and celebrate this momentous occasion. All day yesterday I played Young Jeezy’s My President (on constant repeat) and it seemed like a dream! It feels like just yesterday I was hearing about this man who was gonna take on Hillary Clinton to become the Democratic Presidential Candidate, in reality it was two years ago!! Back then I was soooo for Hillary mainly because she was a woman, but when I listened to Obama and his vision for our country my allegiance went to him! Like I said yesterday I didn’t vote for him because he is Black, I voted for the vision and change he sees for the place I call home- America.
Yesterday just being in the middle of Peachtree Street dapping up other Obama supporters was great! So surreal!! I feel as if I can actually tell my children that they can definitely be anything they want to be in life and that the sky is the limit!! Now whether I feel as a Black American that I have received reparation… that’s an unanswered question… Today I am enjoying the revolutionary and legendary moment that has taken place; and being able to say that the 44th president, whom I help to elect, is African American and has experienced the same/similar struggles that I have faced or will face in my lifetime!! And to add icing on the cake he is married to a wonderful, strong, dignified Black woman who embodies the essence that every woman (black, yellow, red, brown, and white) will wish and strive to have.
CONGRATULATIONS, YES WE DID!!!
